Maybe it’s time to break up with your business?

So often entrepreneurs start businesses out of necessity, but the necessity quickly turns into a passion that is hard to describe.

All of my life I’ve struggled with friends and family giving me interesting looks for declining an invitation on a weekend because I am “working”.

The thing is, sometimes the work I am putting above my personal life could easily be pushed to another day. But the difficult part to explain to those who just don’t “get it” is that this work is what I WANT to be doing over anything else.

It’s so true when entrepreneurs say their business is their baby, I have found myself struggling to put it down. I am often waking up in the middle of the night with a solution to a problem or running out of the shower trying so hard not to slip to jot down the “shower thought” of the day. Building a business means you are constantly climbing a mountain.. We don’t always  have to be doing the work right then, but so many times we work because we can’t imagine doing anything else.

And trust me when I say, I’ve seen firsthand the battle with spouses, family and friends who never seem to understand why you can’t put it down. It’s not work at that point, it’s more of a need that runs through your veins. It is part of you in a way that words just can’t describe.

However, it also brings ups and downs along the way. There are seasons in business where this passion you carry so deeply simply feels like “work”. Identifying these seasons, when your business has become your job, is not an easy task.

So let me ask you,

is it time to break up with your business?

Maybe not an official, knock-down drag-out style break up, but maybe it’s more of a Ross and Rachel type break?

It’s time to take a long, hard look at your stress level. Maybe a day off, a weekend away or even a significant vacation could be just the thing to give you a reset. The perspective that time away can bring is invaluable. When you’re too close to the problem, it is often impossible to solve. However, even an afternoon of playing hooky can have you coming back refreshed and re-energized.

So I’m challenging you, if your business has turned from passion to work, what can you do to step away for a bit and gain some perspective?

xoxo,
Crystal
